So what is wrong with a man who has been out in a pub and who got some beer brand freebies, with the thought of going back home and giving them to you… He had been thinking about that moment and giving you a keyring that would make you happy all night long before going home…

On the other hand, when looking for long-term mating, men do not consider sexual experience important. They even prefer inexperienced women, and dislike promiscuous ones, as being sexually inexperienced and not having had numerous short-term relationships demonstrates better long-term commitment qualities and fidelity for a woman and does not threaten men’s paternal certainty.Men have to be sure that they contribute for and invest resources in their own offspring. Hence, in long-term mating, men will value qualities such as faithfulness and sexual loyalty, which would assure the male mate that the offspring is his own; these qualities would be of no importance in short-term relationship. This is a result of the fact that then committing to a long-term partner, men expect to monopolize their mate’s reproductive resources for a lifetime, provided that they have chosen a mate with a genetic potential of good quality. This also explains why men would feel more threatened by their partner’s sexual infidelity, while women – by emotional one.

Having discussed the main sexual and mating preferences of men, I am now going to compare them to those of women. It appears that there are common mating features and problems that men and women encounter. Both sexes could experience difficulties and costs in their long-term mating due to having had a lot of short-term mates. These costs may be risks of sexually-transmitted diseases or acquiring a social reputation as promiscuous.
